Scaling & Root Planing
In the early stages of periodontal disease, the best treatment option is typically non-surgical care. Plaque that forms on your teeth can become hard and turn into calculus or “tartar” above and below the gums. This tartar creates swelling, redness and bleeding. Removal of the hard deposits allows your gums and bone to heal. This procedure is completed with local anesthetics so there is no discomfort, and you can return to your normal routine following the appointment. Antibiotics may be utilized to maximize your results.

Periodontal Maintenance
Periodontal disease is often referred to as a “silent disease”, in that the patient rarely is aware of infection. Continued monitoring by Dr. Morris is essential to maintaining periodontal health. This is a shared responsibility with the patient’s general dentist, with alternating visits typically every 3 months. During the hour appointment, the hygienist cleans the teeth with ultrasonic scalers and small instruments and polishes the teeth. Support is offered to help the patient learn how to brush and clean between their teeth. Dr. Morris will examine the teeth and gums for any signs of recurring infection. Early recognition of disease can prevent additional bone loss and tooth loss.
